Cedar casket

The caskets are made of cedar fence posts handmade by Joshua Spannagel USA. They have a very fine, high-quality and detailed finish with shellac surface. The drawer is lined with fleece.

History:
After settling in the wild west of the USA, rangers began to build fences to protect their herds and crops. Because softwood, such as pine and spruce, rot too easily or fall victim to insects, the rangers chose juniper wood, which we call cedar because of its smell.
Although gnarled and hard to work with, it was the most weather- and insect-resistant and also withstood the grazing animals that wanted to rub against it from time to time. Nowadays, these steel posts are being replaced. The old fence posts end up in the fire or in wood stoves.

We were lucky enough to get hold of posts and had them carved into useful utensils. Each of the old fence posts has its own history and is more than 200 years old. Sun bleaching, nail holes and abrasions, the idea of countless grazing animals coming and going, can inspire a wide variety of stories.
Cedar fence posts are a truly unique part of the “Wild West”.

Another note:
Wood is a natural product that always “works”. It reacts not only to temperature fluctuations but also to humidity fluctuations. Unevenness, cracks and dimensional and pattern deviations can occur on the object.
